Thinking About Couples Therapy? Here’s What You Can Expect

People often start couples therapy when it’s too late. Did you know you can go to therapy to learn how to be in a relationship and improve your role as a partner? Yes! You DON’T have to wait until you’re on the verge of divorce or a breakup.

I often hear misconceptions such as the problem not being “serious” enough, people fearing that the therapist will side with one partner, or therapy not being able to help. Allow me to break those down for you.

There is such thing as preventative care folks. Again, you DO NOT have to wait until you have one foot out the door to work on your relationship. However, you DO need to be WILLING to put in the work if you want your relationship to work (just like with everything else in life). I tell my clients all the time that it is rare for people to be taught how to have a healthy relationship, or the steps it takes to actually be a good partner. In therapy, these are teachable moments. Sometimes it takes going back to the basics and being intentional with what we do know.

Things don’t have to be “serious” for you to address them. That noise you hear your car making from time to time? Hm.. it comes back doesn’t it? Keep ignoring it and sure enough it’ll cost you a pretty penny. Same thing applies with your relationships.

A good therapist who is trained to work with relationships will balance the clients concerns. My job is not to take sides. Who is that going to benefit? No one. My role is to play as more of a guide, or a coach if you will. In therapy, I highlight dynamics and patterns to bring forth what is ACTUALLY going on and how we can make changes to create a healthier dynamic. Through understanding of our interactions and what we are actually trying to communicate, we can learn a more effective approach.

Therapy helps, when you want to be helped. Therapy is only one hour of one week. The real work happens outside of sessions and in your day to day life.
